Waiver Wire, Week 3: Add Emmett Johnson before everyone is trying to do it

Before we give you the answer key to Week 3 waiver, let's first have a quick word about FAAB spending. My advice to any 0-2 manager is to spend whatever it takes to get the guy(s) you think you need in order to secure this week's W. Generally speaking, an 0-3 start in fantasy football is a disaster. A nearly hopeless situation. Unless you play in a league in which eight teams qualify for the playoffs (which, unfortunately, makes it an illegitimate league), you simply cannot go 0-for-September.

I don't happen to think any player on the wire this week is an empty-the-wallet add, but I'd still have no problem burning over 50% of my FAAB if it meant the difference between 1-2 and 0-3. Let's get this week's win, period.

As a reminder, in this feature I am only promoting potential pickups that are of interest to me, somewhere in my own vast fantasy portfolio. We are not publishing endless, non-curated lists of names. Instead, these are the players I am actually hoping to land. It's not generally going to be a long list. Let's begin with a quarterback of questionable quality:

QB Marcus Mariota, Washington Commanders

Jayden Daniels re-reinjured his left elbow on Sunday performing a routine action that could happen at any time, in any game. I am certainly no elbologist (nor do I have any medical expertise at all), but, if a surgical remedy exists for his dislocation problem, he needs to go that route. He cannot allow this same nasty injury to simply recur every 2-3 games for the remainder of his career.

In any case, we can expect Mariota to be at the controls of Washington's offense for multiple weeks. He's fine. The weapons at his disposal are not the worst and he offers a dash of rushing upside. Mariota is a clear superflex starter, but not of interest in one-QB leagues.

RB Emmett Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs

Look, everyone is going to be pursuing Broncos rookie running back Jonah Coleman this week, because he fell into a significant workload on Sunday after J.K. Dobbins checked out with a hamstring issue. Nothing against Coleman as a player, but A) it sounds like Dobbins and R.J. Harvey could both be good-to-go in the week ahead and B) c'mon, Coleman is nice, but he's not Emmett [expletive] Johnson.

Gimme a guy who can do stuff like this:
