I woke up like any other Wednesday morning when I found an email from my boss’ boss informing me of an unexpected meeting. The next three hours were easily the longest of my life, even though I knew the email likely could only mean one thing: I had unexpectedly lost my dream job. Writing about fantasy sports for a living was that for me, as it never felt like “work” over my 13+ years at Yahoo. To call me devastated would be an understatement.
The following two months were unquestionably the weirdest of my life (including a 25-year high school reunion one week after being let go). I was eating at a nice restaurant in Sacramento after the Scott Fish Bowl draft (not two weeks after losing my job), when the owner/chef oddly told me to leave my dish on the counter. After he was finished explaining the course to everyone, he proceeded to pile on truffle shavings (which was a supplement worth around $100 I did not order). Chef Chris then told me “we’re billing this to Yahoo, f**k those guys!” It was a surreal (albeit not totally crazy) experience given I’m never recognized in public (unlike AUTHOR Andy Behrens. Don’t be fooled by the haters, his adapted movie film is funny!). It almost made the whole getting shitcanned experience worth it. Localis is now my new favorite restaurant, as flattery will get you everywhere with me.
While I’m not super happy with how everything ended at Yahoo, having the freedom to write without any restrictions is extremely appealing (so is the ability to play DraftKings and Underdog now). And getting to do it with Andy is an honor (but don’t tell him I said that). You’ll get more of my personality (TV Talk), and I hope the experience feels more personal as a member. Truthfully, I’m a painfully bad self-promoter and detest asking people for anything. But going out on our own is a risk that requires YOU.
Thank you for your support!
